



RYA Basic Navigation & Safety shore-based course
This new two-day shore-based course is aimed at anyone new to sailing and motor boating, including RIBs and other small powerboats, sea angling and diving, as well as experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers and inland waterway users. It will provide the ideal step up for those who don’t necessarily want to be skipper, but who want to get more involved in the running of a boat.
The syllabus includes:
Passage planning
Charts and position plotting
Safety, including engine checks
Bouyage
Tidal awareness
Visual navigation and pilotage
Rules of the road
Electronic navigation, anchoring, weather forecasts
There will be no end-of-course exam as assessment of the students’ learning will take place throughout the course.
The RYA student’ s pack, supplied free with the course, comprises: Exercises and course information book, Basic Navigation and Safety book, Electronic chart plotter CD, course plotter and plotting charts.
