Electronic Navigation

More yachtsmen than ever now use electronic chart-plotting of one form or another.

The RYA courses have only about 3 hours electronic navigation content but chart plotter handbooks may be difficult to follow. Not everyone finds it easy to explore what their chart-plotter can do and there are many pitfalls. For instance, did you know that some electronic charts may be based on 19th century paper charts and can be as much as 2 miles in error?

Chart-plotters combined with radar are excellent aids to navigation but are you able to use yours to give best results?

New methods of display include radar overlay and mini automatic radar plotting aid.  Although very useful, these can lead to confusion and even contribute to a collision rather than avoid one. Let me help you through the maze.

I can help you get the best results from your electronic navigation system, be it laptop computer based or a dedicated chart-plotter or chart-plotter/radar.

This is probably best achieved on board your own boat where I can tailor the tuition to your needs.

Unlike many tutors, I have a long background of using electronic aids to navigation, including chart-plotters, PCs and radar on my own boat.  I am the author of Wiley Nautical’s Radar Companion and Practical Navigation for the Modern Boat Owner.

If you are considering using a PC based navigation system, contact me for advice.

There are many different software packages and I can help you choose.  If you already use Euronav’s seaPro I run the only Euronav approved course.
